The equator contains the North and South poles respectively and it is an imaginary line that bisects the earth into the northern and southern hemispheres. A system of coordinates that allows locating oneself relative to the Equator, North or South, is called Latitude lines. Grid is a network of meridians of longitude and parallels of latitude. Horizontal and Vertical lines on a map are called a grid. Latitudes and longitudes are measured in degrees. Parallels of latitudes are all the parallel circles from the equator up to the poles. The meridians of longitude are the lines of references that determine how far, east or west, a place is from a given line of reference running from the North Pole to the South Pole. Hint: The vertical lines are known as lines of longitude and the horizontal lines are known as lines of latitude.
